Visit to the EDF Lab Paris-Saclay site for our PhD and post-doctoral students

Amaury Chevillard, 2nd year PhD student, ELPHYSE team, Materials Department, shares his impressions after this visit

The conception of the research centre is noteworthy, with a significant reduction in electrical consumption, making the most of its environment and the lost heat from the machines on site. The eco-conception was noticeably a major subject for the company.

First we had the chance to discover two demonstration rooms about virtual and augmented reality in nuclear plants, made in the goal of an increase in efficiency of preventive maintenance operations. Some of us have been able to walk around a nuclear reactor, and experience the means given to help the maintenance employees prepare their procedure.

We then appreciated the showroom, presenting the large panel of research of the company. Many scale models focused on the research subjects regarding electricity production, be it wind power, photovoltaics or nuclear power. Others dealt with electrical storage, via batteries or hydrogen, whereas the rest of the room introduce the use of artificial intelligence in the conception of the city and the plant of tomorrow.

This activity was organised at the initiative of David Gonzalez-Andrade (post-doc MINAPHOT, Photonics).
