The C2N coordinates CIRCULIGHT (Circulating Light on Any Photonic Platform), a project funded by the European Innovation Council under the Horizon Europe EIC Pathfinder programme.
Bringing together nine partners from six European countries — including seven research institutions and two industrial partners — the project started in April 2024 and will run for 42 months.
Overcoming a major technological bottleneck in photonics
At the core of CIRCULIGHT is the development of a new generation of integrated optical circulators and isolators that can be deployed on any photonic platform.
To achieve this, the project combines advanced magneto-optical composite materials with innovative plasmonic architectures — an approach that aims to overcome a major technological bottleneck in integrated photonics.
Applications addressing strategic challenges
The expected outcomes are broad: more compact, energy-efficient, and versatile photonic systems, with applications in telecommunications, sensing, computing, and healthcare.
