CHIPS of Europe: C2N Committed to Reviving Microelectronics in Europe

C2N plays a key role in the CHIPS of Europe project, a strategic European initiative launched in 2024 to strengthen skills, infrastructure, and the appeal of careers in microelectronics and nanotechnology.

A European Boost for Tomorrow’s Microelectronics

Led by academic partners (Hochschule München University of Applied Sciences, Technical University of Brno, Faculty of Engineering at University of Southern Denmark, Technical University of Sofia, University of SouthEast Norway, Lund University, and Université Paris-Saclay) and European industrial partners (Infineon Technologies Germany and Austria, Next Nano, Endurosat, GE Vingmed Ultrasound, and ECPE), this four-year project aims to:

  • Develop a comprehensive training offer, from technician level to doctorate
  • Modernize and pool technology platforms, including through virtual reality (VR)
  • Raise awareness among the general public and young people, and strengthen the appeal of the sector

C2N’s Strong Involvement

C2N actively contributes to several areas of the project:

► Training

  • Creation and development of courses aligned with industry needs (IUT programs, master’s degrees, doctorates, continuing education)
  • Development of new hands-on teaching experiments and digital learning materials
  • Participation in the design of the virtual cleanroom dedicated to semiconductor technologies, VLabS
  • Implementation of immersive tools (virtual and augmented reality) for safely learning technical skills

► Technology Platforms

  • Modernization of C2N’s training cleanroom
  • Acquisition of a laser lithography system co-funded by CHIPS of Europe, the CMA-AMI INFORISM, and C2N’s Micro and Nano-Technologies Innovation Platform (PIMENT)
  • Contribution by technical staff to the maintenance, forward planning, and operation of equipment for teaching

► Science Outreach and Public Engagement

  • Welcoming pupils, teachers, and students for immersive VR/AR visits
  • Involvement in targeted initiatives to promote diversity and equal opportunities (female-oriented programs, school audiences, etc.)
  • Promotion of scientific careers through events such as the Fête de la Science and open days
  • A Large-Scale Project Serving Technological Sovereignty

Through its commitment to CHIPS of Europe, C2N:

  • Contributes to reviving the microelectronics sector in France and Europe
  • Showcases its expertise in education and pedagogical innovation
  • Builds bridges between education, research, and industry
  • Inspires future generations to pursue scientific and technological careers
