First stone laid for the Centre de Nanosciences et de Nanotechnologies (C2N)

Tuesday 28th June saw the inauguration of the C2N work site, the location of the future Centre de Nanosciences et de Nanotechnologies / Centre for Nanoscience and Nanotechnoloy - C2N (CNRS/Université Paris-Sud), in the presence of Thierry Mandon, Secretary of State for higher education and research, and Gilles Bloch, president of the University of Paris-Saclay.

A few months from now, this site at the heart of Saclay will host one of the largest centres for nanoscience and nanotechnology in France. With its 18,000 sqm building, this research centre will be the largest Île-de-France nanotechnology centre in the Renatech national network. It has one clear ambition: to establish a leading world-class laboratory in France for nanosciences research.
The many people present at this inauguration ceremony all highlighted the importance of the project.

This project is supported by scientists”, explained Gilles Bloch, president of the University of Paris-Saclay. Sylvie Retailleau, president of the University of Paris-Sud, stated that she felt the future laboratory would be “a jewel in the crown of research and teaching”. Secretary of State Thierry Mandon also noted that establishing sustainable science was an objective of the University of Paris-Saclay.

Furthermore, the building features an original detail, it wasn’t merely the first stone that was unveiled, but a “mastaba”, an element that will serve to isolate the building from vibrations, which will prevent the work of the C2N instruments from being interrupted.
C2N is the largest CNRS building project since 1973, and forms part of the Paris-Saclay operations in the national interest supported by the public planning authority. The finished building will be ready for viewing from autumn 2017!
