Sophie Szopa at C2N : pollution, climate and technology : what framework for sustainable development ?

As part of the C2N seminar series, climatologist Sophie Szopa was invited to give a talk entitled Climate and Technology : what framework for sustainable development ?

Current development trajectories have led to severe, and in some cases irreversible changes, in the climate and biodiversity. In this presentation, the causes and differentiated responsibilities in these global changes will be discussed. The talk will also address the options assessed by the IPCC to limit global warming, as well as the trade-offs or synergies between these options and other sustainable development goals.

Sophie Szopa is a senior scientist at the French Alternative Energies and Atomic Energy Commission (CEA), working at the Climate and Environment Sciences Laboratory (LSCE). A specialist in atmospheric chemistry, she uses numerical models to study how chemical processes influence the composition of the atmosphere and how these changes impact climate and air quality. She coordinated the chapter on short-lived climate forcers in the IPCC’s Sixth Assessment Report, Working Group I (AR6-WGI, published in 2021), and contributed to the Synthesis Report of the sixth assessment cycle published in March 2023. As part of the IPCC’s Seventh Assessment Cycle, she is also a coordinating lead author of the upcoming Special Report on Climate Change and Cities, scheduled for release in 2027. From 2022 to 2024, she served as Vice President for Sustainable Development at Université Paris-Saclay.
